Ultrasound for children is one of the most commonly used methods for evaluating body tissues and organs. This examination is performed to obtain detailed information about the patient’s tissues and organs – their shape, contours, size, structure and other important parameters. This information helps the doctor develop the most appropriate treatment plan for the specific patient.
How to prepare for an ultrasound visit?
Talking to your child:
Tell them that you are going to have an examination and how it will be done.
Explain that the examination is completely painless and will not cause any discomfort.
Emphasize that if you lie still, the examination will go faster and easier.
Inform them that the room will be slightly darkened during the examination, but you will be nearby.
Building confidence:
Help your child understand that there is nothing to worry about and answer his/her questions.
Depending on the type of examination, certain instructions must be followed:
Examination of the abdominal organs:
The child should not eat or drink (except water) for 3–4 hours before the examination. If taking medications, they can be taken with water.
Examination of the kidneys and urinary tract:
The child may eat and drink, but gas-causing foods and drinks should be avoided 24 hours before the examination. You should come to the examination with a full bladder to obtain the most informative results.
