Dopplerography (DUPLEX)

Duplex scanning or Dopplerography (DUPLEX) is a vascular examination that allows obtaining three-dimensional color-coded images of blood vessels and analyzing the direction and speed of blood flow. This examination provides the neurologist with valuable information about the condition of the blood vessels, helps to identify changes and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

Dopplerography is often used as the first, simplest ultrasound method in the diagnosis of vascular diseases, as it allows for accurate determination of circulatory disorders and the functional state of blood vessels.

Dopplerography of the vessels of the head and neck provides:

  • anatomical image of blood vessels;
  • registration of the direction and speed of blood flow;
  • detection of flow disorders, such as venous reflux disorders;
  • information about the thickness of the blood vessel walls;
  • detection of vascular anomalies, such as narrowing, blockages or atherosclerotic changes;
  • detection of congenital vascular developmental features (reduced diameter, tortuosity or additional vascular branching).

Changes in the blood vessels of the head and neck can increase the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, so an examination of both areas is often necessary to fully assess cerebral blood flow.

Dopplerography of the vessels of the head and neck should be performed if a person has:

  • persistent headaches or dizziness;
  • high blood pressure or other cardiovascular diseases;
  • pain in the cervical spine (tingling, pricking, pulling sensation in the back of the head);
  • high cholesterol;
  • atherosclerosis;
  • diabetes mellitus,
  • tinnitus or ringing in the ears, as well as after a stroke or head injury.

The examination is also valuable for assessing the effectiveness of cardiovascular disease treatment, especially in people at increased risk – smokers, in case of overweight or sedentary lifestyles, as well as those with a family history of stroke or heart attack.

How is a Doppler examination performed?

During the procedure, a gel is applied to the skin, and the doctor examines the blood vessels with an ultrasound probe, displaying them on a screen. This method is informative, safe and painless. It does not require special preparation, and the procedure lasts approximately up to 40 minutes, with immediate availability of results.
